Abstract
In the manufacture of silicon steel containing 2.5 to 4% of silicon the iron is refined by an oxygen process, the treatment being continued until the carbon content of the metal is reduced to 0.03% or less, after which the metal is tapped at not less than 2900 DEG F. After the addition of silicon and sulphur, the metal may be stirred with an ingot of substantially its own composition, and is then cast, preferably at a temperature of at least 2850 DEG F. The ingots are then hot rolled to strip with an exit temperature of 1400 DEG -1700 DEG F., and then cold rolled after which it may be annealed at 1500-1700 DEG F. to produce the desired grain orientation and decarburized to a carbon content of not more than 0.005%. Preferably the latter treatment is carried out at 1350 DEG -1800 DEG F. in an atmosphere of 5-40% hydrogen, remainder nitrogen with a dewpoint of 60 DEG F. or above; it may be followed by a desulphurizing box anneal in pure hydrogen at 2000-2200 DEG F.
