Abstract
Electrolytically produced aluminium is refined by subjecting the liquid metal without intermediate solidification to a vacuum treatment in a soaking furnace. The liquid metal at 830 DEG C. may be subjected to a pressure of 0,8 m.m. mercury for 20 minutes during which the temperature may drop to 760 DEG C. and the metal may then be cast in a continuous casting plant. The billets produced were found to be free from oxide inclusions and micro-cavities.
