Abstract
Molten aluminium is subjected to vacuum treatment, to remove gaseous and solid inclusions, immediately after its production by electrolysis. The treatment may be for about 1 hour and inert gases, e.g. nitrogen, may be passed through the molten metal. Salt treatment can be carried out before the vacuum treatment and the aluminium can be cooled to casting temperature in the vacuum treatment furnace.
