Abstract
Molten steel is treated with a gas containing at least 75 per cent of oxygen and then subjected under a strongly deoxidizing slag, to a low absolute pressure. The slag should be free from heavy metal oxides and components having a low vapour pressure at the working temperature. The pressure may be reduced to 3 to 20 mms. and the space above the bath may be heated, e.g. by an electric arc. Both oxygen and sulphur are stated to be removed by the process.
