Abstract
Basic Bessemer steel is carburized so that the carbon content is at least equal to the oxygen content and is then degassed under reduced pressure by periodically increasing and decreasing the depth to which a tube connected to a vacuum degassifying vessel dips into the molten metal in a ladle whereby part of the contents of the ladle enter the degassifying vessel and, after degassifying and heating are returned to the ladle, theh operations being repeated until the steel is degassified. The carbon may be added before or during the vacuum treatment e.g. in the apparatus described and claimed in Specification 801,518, with or without the addition of oxygen. The degassed metal may be cast in the atmosphere or in the presence of a non-oxidizing gas. A deoxidizing substance and/or alloying elements may also be added to the metal while in the vacuum chamber.
