Abstract

892,550. Degasifying metals. HERAEUS G.m.b.H., W. C. July 11, 1958 [July 26, 1957], No. 22323/58. Class 72. A method of degasifying molten metals comprises placing the molten metal in a ladle in a vacuum chamber and introducing a gas below the surface of the metal while continuing to evacuate the chamber. As shown, a ladle 2 containing the metal is placed in a vacuum chamber 3, the pressure reduced, and a pipe 8, led through a gland 7 in a cover 4, adjusted to penetrate below the surface of the metal. A gas, which may be an inert gas or the vapour of a substance normally solid or liquid, is passed through the pipe and bubbled through the metal while a vacuum is maintained in the chamber.
