Abstract
Improvements in a method of vacuum decarburization of a molten metal, inside a closed container, in which oxidizing material is introduced into said container and in which it is desired to minimize the oxidation of certain metallic values contained in said metal by establishment of a predetermined ambient pressure inside said container and measurement of the composition and flow rate of the inlet gases, measurement of the composition of the outlet gases to determine the expected rate of carbon separation from said metal, the improvements of which, they comprise the determination of the expected pressure inside the container according to the expected rate of carbon separation from said steel; the measurement of the effective pressure within the container and the adjustment of said composition and flow rates of said gases, and the maintenance of said effective pressure in the container, at least at a level as great as that of the expected pressure .
