Abstract
A known quantity of a tracer gas, which is normally absent from O2 and from combustion products, pref. a rare gas, is added to the O2 blast and the concn. of it in the outlet stream is determined by analysis, esp. by mass spectrometry. Quantity of rare gas added is 5 wt.%, and it may be added throughout process, or during parts of it, partic. the final stage. Use of the flow rate derived from the tracer concn., and the concn. of (CO + CO2), enables calculation of amount of C left in melt.
