Abstract

1318972 Refining metals SALZGITTER HUTTENWERK A G 18 June 1970 [18 June 1969] 29678/70 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Metal is continuously refined by top blowing with refining gas in two stages after each of which the metal is separated from its accompanying slag. Fresh slag is produced in the second refining stage and, after separation from the fully refined metal, passes under gravity to the beginning of the first stage which it enters above the liquid level in the first stage. As shown in Fig.1 metal such as molten pig iron enters first refining chamber 1a through inlet 5 and is top blown with oxygen. Slag and metal flow along a slagmetal separation channel 2a at the end of which slag is removed through channel 11a while partially refined metal flows through a trap system over a weir 4 and into second refining chamber 1b where it is blown with oxygen containing lime dust and possibly fine ore. Fully refined metal and freshly formed slag flow along channel 2b and are separated, metal leaving the apparatus via a trap system and channel 13 while the slag flows over weir 14 into the first refining vessel 1a
