Abstract

1,224,594. Metallurgical converters. CONZINC RIOTINTO OF AUSTRALIA Ltd. 7 Feb., 1969 [16 Feb., 1968], No. 6643/69. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] Apparatus for refining metals comprises a circular refining zone into which raw metal and oxygen-containing gas are continuously introduced, an elongated second refining zone and a slag settling zone, the bath being at the same level in the three zones. The second zone is connected at one end to the circular zone and has an outlet at its other end, while the slag separation zone is connected by one end to the circular zone at a location spaced from the junction of the second zone. The apparatus also includes means for introducing oxygen into the bath in the second refining zone, and means such as lances for causing the metal and slag to circulate co-currently in the circular zone but counter-currently in the second zone. As shown, metal tangentially enters circular zone 10 at 13, and gas enters at 34; metal flows to second refining zone 11 having lances 15, 16, 17 while slag passes to settling zone 12 having weir 27 and well 28. Projections 19, which may be of refractory brick or of dolomite and which may be cooled define a third refining zone having lance 18, the flow of slag thereto being retarded by lances 23, 24.
