Abstract
1348513 Open hearth furnaces KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AG 20 Oct 1971 [14 Dec 1970] 48807/71 Heading F4B [Also in Division C7] A rectangular open hearth furnace for the continuous refining of copper has three zones formed by partitions 2 and 3. Copper is continuously introduced, as liquid through inlet 12, or as solid through inlet 16 and is heated in zone 5. The copper passes through an opening in partition 2 into zone 6 where it is oxidized by air blown through orifices 20, 21 to form a supernatant layer of slag a which is removed through opening 17. A slag barrier wall 10 has openings below the slag level to allow slag-free, refined copper to flow through and then through an opening in partition 3 into the final zone 7. In this zone the copper is deoxidized by reducing gases, e.g. ammonia or methane injected through nozzles 18, 19. Refined and deoxidized copper is removed over weir 4. The furnace is heated by a burner 14, the hot gases passing counter-current to the flow of copper to a chimney 23.
