Abstract

1,241,367. Nickel sulphide. G. J. BRITTINGHAM. 15 Dec., 1969 [17 Dec., 1968], No. 61081/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions C7 and F4] A process for the continuous treatment of sulphide nickel ores comprises (a) smelting the ores to form a high oxygen potential slag overlaying a high-grade nickel matte containing less than 2% iron; (b) isolating a portion of the slag layer from the high grade matte; (c) reducing the isolated slag to separate a lower grade nickel matte therefrom; and (d) returning said separated matte to said high grade matte layer. A suitable apparatus (Fig. 1) includes a smelting hearth 9 containing high grade matte 26 and a reducing hearth 12. In operation ore, air or oxygen, and optionally fluxes are introduced via shaft 14A. Fuel may be added to bring the temperature to 1250-1350‹ C. Shaft 14B is supplied with reducing agent e.g. a low nickel pyrrhotite and some air. The low grade matte produced travels from 12 to 9 its speed being controlled by wiers 18 some of it being optionally tapped at 19 in order to lower the cobalt content of the high grade matte. A single flue 15 may be used, the meeting of the two gas streams providing efficient precipitation of entrained materials. It is stated that a similar process may be used to produce copper metal (see U.S.A. Specification 3,460,817).
