Abstract

1,211,053. Recovering metal values from manganese based ores. KENNECOTT COPPER CORP. Dec.5, 1968 [Jan. 8, 1968] No.57883/68. Heading C7D. A method for recovering values of at least one of Cu, Ni, Co and Mo from ore materials containing Mn as the major metal constituent (e.g. deep sea nodules) comprises smelting the air dried ore with a reducing agent (e. g. coke or natural gas), the temperature and duration of smelting and the amount of reducing agent used being such that the required metal(s) is/are preferentially reduced to form a metallic product containing little Mn, which is recovered, and a residual slag containing substantially all of the Mn. The reducing agent may be used in amounts of up to 5%, the reducing temperature may be 1150-1500‹C., flux material may be added to provide a fluid slag and facilitate the separation of the slag from the metal(s), reaction times of 1-4 hours are suitable and sulphur bearing minerals (e.g. iron pyrites) may be included in the change to enhance the reduction of Co and Cu.
