Abstract
1,274,287. Distilling zinc. BECHTEL INTERNATIONAL CORP. Oct. 14, 1969 [Sept. 18, 1969], No.50547/69. Heading C7D. A process for smelting a mineral product, containing as its major metal constituent copper, zinc or a mixture thereof, comprises injecting the mineral product, finely divided flux, an oxygen containing gas and optionally a fuel into a bath of molten slag in order to obtain a vaporized mixture containing a reducing gas and a constituent of the mineral product which may be recovered therefrom, and a non vaporized portion. If zinc oxide is the mineral product the zinc is vaporized along with e.g. lead from which it may be recovered, after condensing, by refluxing, and any copper present is recovered as a matte. If copper concentrate in the form of the sulphide is the mineral product the sulphur is vaporized in the form of H 2 S, COS or SO 2 from which S may be obtained by reaction with further SO 2 , and a copper matte containing e.g. Fe and precious metals but deficient in e.g. Zn and Pb is obtained as the non vaporized portion.
