Abstract

1321612 Extracting metals M D BAXTER [trading as ADVERTRANS] 2 June 1970 [2 June 1969] 27893/69 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Finely divided metalliferous material is passed downwardly in a dispersed condition through a reaction zone heated by arcs produced by rod electrodes angularly spaced round the material path, a gaseous reduction medium also being injected into the reaction zone. As shown in Fig. 1, powdered ore from conduit 15 and reducing gas from nozzle 14 are discharged between electrodes 11, and molten metal collected in bath 17, while in the modification of Fig. 2 a separation zone 20 is surrounded by magnetic coils 24 which accelerate ferromagnetic particles downwardly thereby separating them from non- ferrous materials which are carried off in an upward stream of gas induced by fan 25 and subsequently separated. The gas stream may be such as to temporarily solidify the ferrous particles, while the coils may alternatively be arranged to tumble the ferrous particles together so that they coalesce. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the electrodes 40 are axially adjustable so that they may also be used for initially melting a charge of scrap metal, while as shown in Fig. 6 (not shown) the extraction apparatus may be integrated with a conventional arc furnace wherein the extracted metal is finally processed.
