Abstract
1,187,942. Refining cast iron. CENTRO SPERIMENTALE METALLURGICO S.p.A. March 6, 1968 [March 18, 1967], No.10852/68. Heading C7D. [Also in Division F4] Cast iron is continuously converted into steel by flowing it e.g. from a conduit 4 countercurrent to and dispersed in a slag/gas foam 10 into which is blown oxygen horizontally through nozzles 6 in the walls of the refining vessel, e. g. a refractorylined shaft reactor 1, to cause the foam to flow towards the top of the vessel where it overflows e. g. through conduit 8, the metal flowing towards the bottom of the vessel e. g. into a refined steel bath 2 where it is tapped e. g. through hole 3. Powdered lime and/or ferrous minerals and/or solid, liquid or gaseous fuel may be blown into the foam with the oxygen. Iron or steel scrap, pieces of limestone and ferrous minerals may be introduced above the slag e. g. through opening 7. The slag is preferably formed of calcium ferrite and 3-4% fluorite.
