Abstract
847,862. Degasing metals. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE Ltd. Feb. 7, 1958 [Feb. 9, 1957], No. 4115/58. Class 72 Metal is vacuum degassed' by feeding at a controlled rate to a high vacuum degasification vessel from which it flows under gravity to a chamber at sub-atmospheric pressure, the rate of said flow being controlled by the relative pressures in the vessel and the chamber, and the static head of metal in the vessel. As shown, metal in receiver 2 flows through foraminated disc 4, the rate of flow being controlled by adjustable stoppers 5 in some of the jet holes. The depth of molten metal H is measured electrically by means of carbon bars 11. A stopper 12 is used initially to prevent communication between high vacuum vessel 1-1<SP>1</SP> and chamber 17-17<SP>1</SP>, which can contain a neutral, reducing or inert gas such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide or argon. When the desired head of metal H is reached, stopper 12 allows the metal to flow into chamber 17- 17<SP>1</SP> in which may be placed a ladle or mould. At least two chambers 17<SP>1</SP> may be used successively to reduce the delay between operations.
