Abstract
908,471. De-gassing steel. FOUNDRY SERVICES INTERNATIONAL Ltd. Dec. 11, 1959 [Dec. 18, 1958], No. 40941/58. Class 72. Molten steel is refined for the removal of dissolved or occluded hydrogen by adding to the steel a solid substance which at the temperature of the molten steel generates a flushing gas, e.g. CO 2 and/or CO, for removing the hydrogen, whilst the steel, preferably in a ladle 2, is housed in a chamber 1 in which the gaseous pressure over the melt is reduced below atmospheric pressure, e.g. by pump 13 connected via exit conduit 10. The substance 7 may be introduced by plunger rods 6 and a gas such as chlorine may be flushed through the steel from conduit 17. Air, nitrogen or argon may be introduced into the chamber through inlet conduit 8. Specifications 815,847 and 901,223 are referred to.
