Abstract

896,589. Refining steel. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE. Nov. 3, 1958 [Nov. 16, 1957], No. 35149/58. Class 72. A method of refining steel comprises treating the steel in a container provided with means ensuring fluid tightness and movable into a position giving minimum depth to the steel bath, completely de-slagging the bath, adjusting the container to give minimum depth of steel, and evacuating the container. As shown, a steel bath may be refined by surface blowing in a container 1 having a flange 4 and frusto-conical elements 5, the container may then be transferred to a carriage 16 having an electro-magnetic stirrer 15 and a complete de-slagging carried out. A closure means 9, having sealing elements 8 co-operating with the flange 4 and connected to a vacuum pump, may be adjusted over the mouth of the container and a vacuum applied. The container may be rotatable about its longitudinal axis. It is stated that carbon and oxygen are removed from the steel, the carbon to less than 0À05%.
