Abstract

890,467. Degasifying metals. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. July 27, 1960 [Aug. 6, 1959], No. 26897/59. Class 72. Apparatus for degassing molten metal comprises a vacuum chamber, a refractory lined inlet conduit to the vacuum chamber leading from a supply container, a refractory lined outlet conduit leading to a vertically displaceable container, the length of the outlet conduit being such as to form a barometric seal and the bottom of the outlet conduit having a nozzle cooperating with a stopper secured to the bottom of the second container when the latter is in the raised position. As shown, molten metal is supplied to a stoppered tundish 13 connected to the bottom of a vacuum chamber 10 by a conduit 12, the latter ending at the apex of a cone forming the bottom of the chamber. An outlet conduit 14 leading from the lowest point of a channel 21 ends in a nozzle 25 which cooperates with a stopper 26 formed on the bottom of a tundish 15 which has a stoppered outlet. The chamber may be preheated by burners through openings 16.
