Abstract

<PICT:0949060/C3/1> Steel is treated by a continuous process which comprises placing it in an open container, heating and circulating it by electrical induction, deoxidizing it with aluminium so that alumina formed is taken up by a supernatant slag and continuously passing the steel from the container through a duct shielding it from the air into a mould. For example, molten steel 6 from a converter is poured, at a temperature 20 degrees below the normal temperature at the end of a converter heat, from a spout 3, and preferably in a stream of which one side is free, into a container 4 fitted with an electrical induction coil 10, where it is then heated and the aluminium and alloying addition,if any,are added continuously; alumina and other impurities come out in the supernatant slag 12 owing to the stirring action. The container 4 is connected by the duct 14 to an auxiliary chamber 16 which is filled with an inert gas e.g. nitrogen or argon supplied from cylinders 17 through the dome 18 and ducts 22, 23, 24 and fitted with an outlet nozzle 27 whose bore 28 diverges and a metal stopper rod 32 fixed to a piston 35 and a rod 36, the latter being located in a cylinder 37 between the dome 18 and chamber 16. Initially the stopper rod 32 is pressed downwards against the nozzle 27 by passing pressure fluid through the hole 44. To operate the flow of steel, the pressure of the inert gas is increased until the plug 9 is blown out of the hole 8, and the stopper rod 32 is raised by passing pressure fluid through the hole 45, the lower end of the nozzle 27 being below the level 30 of the liquid steel in the mould 31 to exclude air.
