Abstract

Pig iron is continuously refined by introducing it as a stream 8 into a refining bath where partial refining has already been effected and remote from where an oxidizing gas is blown in, e.g. through porous refractory elements 13, 24 and <PICT:1114961/C6-C7/1> 26 attached to sealed wind boxes 13a, 24a and 26a in the bottom of the bath tank, so as to cause the metal in the bath to circulate, as shown by arrows 16-20. The mean carbon content of the bath does not exceed 0.5% to prevent red fume formation and that in contact with the oxidizing gas is 0.2% or less. As shown, the tank is divided into three compartments 2-4 by two refractory partitions 5 and 6 inter-communicating through openings5a and 6a at the bottom, and the refined metal discharged continuously over pouring tip 9. Lance 14 feeds a slagging agent such as lime suspended in air and lance 15 feeds cooling additives such as lump or pulverulent ore suspended in nitrogen. Mixing may be assisted by electromagnetic agitation.
