Abstract

1321096 Mixing apparatus RHEINSTAHL HUTTENWERKE AG 27 Aug 1970 [6 Sept 1969] 41298/70 Heading B1C [Also in Division C7] Apparatus for desulphurising pig iron in the tapping channel of a blast furnace comprises a container 2 with refractory inner surface, an axial inlet channel 3 and tangential outlet channel 4, and a rotatable refractory beam stirrer 8, 9 which in operation is rotated against the direct flow from the inlet to the outlet, see Fig. 3. Desulphurising agent is introduced at 12. As shown the roof of the inlet 3 is below the melt level and may be below that of the outlet weir 7 to prevent ingress of blast furnace slag and escape of desulphurising agent; the roof of the outlet 4 is above the level of the inlet and above that of the outlet weir 7 but below the top of a barrier 6 which arrests the spent desulphurising agent thus separating it from the melt. The floor of the apparatus slops slightly from inlet to outlet; the container and stirrer are detachable and can be lifted and exchanged by a crane. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement suitable for use with a blast furnace having a tapping hole at the level of the channel, but if the hole is at a higher level both the melt and the desulphurising agent may be fed in a joint stream (see Fig. 2, not shown) through an aperture in the container cover. Suitable dimensions are given for outputs of 1-7 turns/min. A desulphurising process is claimed in which the degree of base CaO/SiO 2 of the blast furnace slag is less than 1.2, and/or the coke used has a sulphur content greater than 1%, and the sulphur content of the pig iron is reduced in the apparatus described.
