Abstract

In the inoculating and/or alloying of molten iron or steel, where the addn. is made during casting, the inoculant or alloying addn. is made without exposure to air, in the interior of the melt and in a direction parallel to the direction in which the melt is flowing. The pref. device consists of a vessel contg. the melt and fitted with a bottom-pour stopper, the additive being fed down an axial hole in the stopper rod and through an outlet in the bottom end of the stopper rod; the additive may be a fluid. The axial hole in the stopper rod pref. contains a feeder tube surrounded by a second tube providing thermal insulation. The process is used for treating molten iron or steel, e.g. to control lamellar graphite in cast iron, and using additives such as Fe-Si or Fe-P; or blowing a gas into steel.
