Apparatus for carrying out subatmospheric treatment of bottom poured steel comprises an ingot mould 1 with a removable suction head having a connection 17 to vacuum means 22, and a second opening closable by an airtight cover 14. Inert gas may be supplied to the mould through a pipe 25.
