Steel ingots of 25 tons or more weight are poured into moulds having a length-to-internaldiameter of less than 1.6 and situated in a vacuum-chamber, the melt being then covered with a deoxidizing slag, and the top of the ingot electrically heated, e.g. by an electric arc, so that the ingot solidifies gradually from the bottom to the top.
