Abstract
1397449 Refining Fe-Cr melts STORA KOPPARBERGS BERGSLAGS AB 14 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 27908/72 Heading C7D A process for removing C from Cr-containing iron melts comprises subjecting a substantially slag-free melt to vigorous stirring whilst blowing O 2 on to the surface. The melt may be stirred by means of a vibratory ladle and/or by passing Ar in through the bottom of the melt. In an example, Si is initially removed as slag from pig iron in a vibratory ladle, after which O 2 is blown on to the surface and Ar in through the bottom of the melt. This reduces the C content from 4% to 1À6%. The blowing is continued with the ladle stationary and a C content of 0À03% was achieved. The melt may be of high Cr-steel or stainless steel.
