PURPOSE:To improve the yield of product molten steel without using any sub- material such as CaO in converter operation by the use of pretreated molten iron which has undergone desiliconization, desulfurization and dephosphorization at the time of refining medium carbon steel and high carbon steel in a bottom blowing converter. CONSTITUTION:Molten iron for steel making raw material is oxidation-refined by using alkali metal compounds such as Na2CO3, whereby its Si, S and P are removed into the molten slag. This low-silicon-, low-sulfur- and low-phosphorus molten iron is charged into the bottom blowing converter and oxygen, etc. are blown into the converter from its bottom. In this case, Si, S and P have berorehand been removed through the pretreatment, hence slag forming agents such as CaO are not used and the decarbonization refining is accomplished in the absence of slag. Hence, there are no Fe components to be carried away by the slag and the medium-to-high-carbon steels are produced at a high Fe yield.
