Abstract
In a process for deoxidizing titanium according to the parent Specification the titanium is treated with substantially nitrogen-free calcium or calcium hydride at 900-1000 DEG C. in a substantially oxygen- and nitrogen-free atmosphere, the metal then being cooled and a thin layer of titanium removed from its surface. The deoxidizing treatment is preferably carried out at 950 DEG C. in an oxygen atmosphere and the metal is cooled either by withdrawing it from the treatment bath into the argon or transferring it, under argon, to a low-melting salt bath where it is allowed to cool and then with drawing it into the argon. The surface layer may be removed by grinding, scraping, sand- or shot-blasting or by pickling in an alkali or acid bath, e.g. a bath of approximately 5 per cent hydrochloric acid.
