Abstract
A process of nitriding steel articles comprises treating the steel in a soft nitriding bath containing more than 30% alkali metal cyanates to produce a surface layer at least 0.3 mm. thick and containing at least 0.01% dissolved nitrogen. The bath may contain alkali metal cyanides and carbonates and may be held at 570 DEG C. After nitriding the steel may be rapidly cooled by quenching.
