Abstract

Steel friction discs, particularly clutch discs are hardened after the mechanical finishing of the disc, especially by agents which liberate nitrogen, for example in a a cyanide bath or by the carbon nitriding process. The treatment is then completed by quenching the discs in a salt bath such as a melt of sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate to produce an oxide layer.
