Abstract
Spring steel or a component made of spring steel is treated to enable it to withstand high temperature without substantial loss of resilience by hardening and tempering in the usual manner and subsequently hardening the surface by gas or liquid nitriding. The nitriding may be carried out by heating to 475 DEG to 550 DEG C. in ammonia or in a bath containing a mixture of potassium and sodium cyanides for 10 to 24 hours. As an example, a spring made of a chrome vanadium steel of the following composition: carbon, .4 to .5 per cent; silicon, not more than .3 per cent; manganese, .5 to .7 per cent; sulphur, not more than .04 per cent; phosphorus, not more than .04 per cent; chromium, 1.0 to 1.5 per cent; vanadium, .15 to .3 per cent; copper, not more than .15 per cent; nickel, trace, may be hardened by heating to 860 DEG to 890 DEG C. and quenching in oil, tempered at 400 DEG to 430 DEG C. and then nitrided as above.
