Abstract

643,367. Annealing. MOLINDER, A. G., and UDDEHOLMS AKTIEBOLAG. Oct. 31. 1947, No. 29166. '[Classes 72 and 82(i)] In a thermal treatment of high carbon corrosion-resisting steels containing 0.8 to 1.4 per cent C, and 11-16 per cent Cr, with or without up to 5 per cent in all of S, P, Mn, Si, Mo, W, Sb, N, Co, Ni, Al, Ti, the steel is treated in three steps, viz.: (a) heating to a temperature in excess of its basic hardening temperature, (b) cooling to a temperature below minus 25‹C,(e) heating to between 30‹C. and 200‹C., the exact temperatures and durations of heating being such as to produce the required hardness and the temperature in the first step being below that which produces maximum hardness by the present process. As shown in the curve the steel is heated to a temperature between 1<SP>2</SP> and s above n the basic hardening temperature, i.e. that producing the maximum hardness by the normal hardening and limpering process, but below t the temperature producing maximum hardness by the present process. The temperature, depending on the composition of the steel, is in the range 1060‹C. to 1125‹C. Razor blade steel in strip form having an analysis 1.0 per cent C, 0.25 per cent Si, 1.0 per cent Mn, and 14 per cent Cr may be heated in a continuous furnace to 1100‹C. in a protective atmosphere, e.g., cracked ammonia, cooled to atmospheric temperature between water-cooled metal blocks and then, immediately or within two hours, passed through a bath of methylated spirits cooled to -65‹C to -75‹C by solid carbon dioxide. The strip is then tempered at 110‹C. for one hour to produce a hardness of 820 Vickers units and is stated to be free from brittleness.
