Abstract
A process for improving the physical properties of chromized steel articles, the steel having a carbon content not exceeding 0.1 per cent or whose carbon is bound in a stable manner by carbide forming elements, e.g. Ti, Ta and/or Nb. and having a substantially carbon-free chromized surface, comprises cooling the articles rapidly from temperature above 900 DEG C. after chromizing. The articles may be cooled directly from the chromizing process by quenching in oil or water or they may be cooled to room temperature, reheated to 950 DEG C. and quenched. The reheating may take place in a protective gas atmosphere, e.g. incompletely burned illuminating gas, which may contain sufficient oxygen to produce a surface of green oxide of chromium.
