Abstract
583,165. Carburizing steel. BRITISH IRON & STEEL CORPORATION, Ltd., RILEY, H. L., and TAYLOR, J. July 1, 1942, No. 9082. [Class 51 (ii)] Town gas for use as a carburizing atmosphere in the treatment of steel is treated for the elimination of oxygen or oxygen and water vapour and if desired the carbon dioxide. The oxygen is eliminated by passing the gas over a catalyst such as metallurgical coke treated with iron oxide, or nickel subsulphide. The catalyst is heated to a temperature of about 750‹C. Water vapour is removed by calcium chloride and the carbon dioxide by soda lime or other well known methods may be employed for their removal.
