Abstract

575,676. Coating with metals. SAMUEL, R. L. March 1, 1943, No. 3309. [Class 82 (ii)] Metals are diffused into iron and steel by heating the latter at 500-1150‹ C. in a carburising atmosphere in the presence of the vapour of a halide or halides of one or more of the metals niobium, tantalum, tungsten, molybdenum, zirconium, titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, nickel and cobalt. Preferably, the temperature range is 700-1050‹ C. and the halide a chloride. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of charcoal or coke, which serves as a carrier for the halide. The chloride or chlorides may be formed in situ by the reaction of hydrogen chloride with one or more of the metals referred to above by passing a mixture of acetylene and hydrogen chloride over the metals in a chamber heated to the appropriate temperature, the iron or steel under treatment being at the end of the chamber remote from the point of introduction of the gases. Specifications 572,703 and 574,737 are referred to.
