Abstract

574,737. Coating metals ; cementation. SAMUEL, R. L. March 20, 1942, No. 3729. [Classes 72 and 82 (ii)] In the production of metallic coatings on iron or steel, the latter is heated to 5SO-1250‹ C. with an agent comprising a porous heat-resist. ing substance containing on its surface and in its pores a compact and adhesive layer containing a halide or halides of manganese, nickel, cobalt, copper, tin, niobium, tantalum, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, titanium and/or zirconium in an atmosphere of hydrogen or other gas, e.g. acetylene, which does not react with the iron &c. except by carburization or decarburization. Where the coating metal is nickel, cobalt, copper or tin, the agent is prepared by impregnating the porous substance with a solution of a halide, preferably a chloride, of the metal and when the other metals are used by impregnating the porous substance with, a solution of a highly soluble sodium potassium or ammonium salt of the metal and reducing it by heating with a hydrogen halide at an elevated temperature. The porous substance may consist of fragments of porcelain, ceramic, pottery, earthenware or slag. Coatings containing two or more of the above metals or one of the above metals with chromium may be made by producing porous substances containing mixtures of the halides of the metals concerned. If the heating takes place in an atmosphere of acetylene, part of the coating may be in the form of a carbide. Specifications 572,703 and 3077.5/38, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, are referred to.
