Abstract

Chlorhydrocarbons, especially tetrachlorethane are produced by treating with chlorine, preferably in presence of catalysts such as iron, a dilute acetylene mixture containing much hydrogen. The gas mixture may be produced by heating methane to 1000 DEG C. for about ,01 of a second at one tenth of an atmosphere pressure, but gases containing also carbon monoxide and nitrogen are also mentioned. The chlorination may be effected at 200 DEG C. In an example 90 per cent of the acetylene was converted into tetrachlorethane.
