Abstract

In the production of hydrogen from hydrocarbons and steam by means of a chromium catalyst, at least 1 per cent of hydrogen sulphide or other gaseous sulphur compound is added to the reaction gases to activate the catalyst. A suitable mixture of hydrocarbons and hydrogen sulphide may be obtained from coke-oven gas or destructive hydrogenation gas by extraction with kerosene under pressure. The temperature of the reaction should be at least 1000 DEG C. and an excess of steam is preferably present.
