Abstract

Gas for the cementation of steel is produced by removing substantially the whole of the carbon dioxide and water vapour from producer gas, water gas or other gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen, adding to the gas so produced olefinic products, and finally passing the mixture over a suitable catalyst, such as nickel and at a temperature, e.g. 150-200 DEG C., such that the olefines are transformed into saturated hydrocarbons and low enough to avoid reaction between the carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
