Abstract
A mixture of hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide, obtained for example by washing coal gas with water and heating or reducing the pressure on the solution, is led over glowing carbon, when conversion into carbon disulphide, hydrogen and carbon monoxide occurs. An inert diluting gas such as nitrogen may be present. Carbon disulphide may be separated by cooling or absorption in active charcoal and the gas mixture containing unconverted hydrogen sulphide added to the crude coal gas; or this hydrogen sulphide may be extracted and used for making carbon disulphide or for other purposes. In an example, by conducting a gas containing 52 per cent hydrogen sulphide, and 44 per cent carbon dioxide over coke at a temperature of about 950 DEG C., a 90 per cent conversion of hydrogen sulphide to carbon disulphide occurs, after separation of which, together with unconverted hydrogen sulphide, a gas containing 66 per cent carbon monoxide and 34 per cent hydrogen is obtained. Specifications 314,060 and 334,856, [both in Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], are referred to.
