Abstract
In obtaining alkali carbonates or hydroxides and ammonia by cyanidizing a mixture of alkali carbonate and carbonaceous material with nitrogen at a high temperature and hydrolysing the product, the necessary mixture of alkali carbonate and carbon is obtained by treating a mixture of alkali sulphate and carbon or carbonaceous material with carbon dioxide and steam at an elevated temperature, say 500-800 DEG C. According to a preferred modification, the mixture of alkali sulphate and carbon &c. is first heated at a temperature of 900 DEG C. and the sulphide containing reaction product is treated with steam and carbon dioxide at 400-500 DEG C. Hydrogen sulphide is also obtained. The reaction mass may be employed in briquetted form and brown or bituminous coal may be employed as carbonaceous material. If the hydrolysis with steam is carried out on the briquetted cyanidized product, alkali carbonate is produced but if the cyanidized mass is broken up and spread in thin layers on shallow pans for the steam treatment, mixtures of alkali carbonate and hydroxide are produced. Examples in which the starting materials comprise sodium or potassium sulphate are given.
