Abstract
Alkali cyanides are hydrolysed by steam in a thick layer, say in the form of briquettes, to produce alkali carbonate or in a thin layer, say in layers 2mm. or less thick of the pulverulent material, to produce alkali hydroxide admixed with a lesser quantity of alkali carbonate. According to the examples a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and coal is cyanidized by the action of nitrogen at 950 DEG C. and the resulting product is hydrolysed by steam at 400-500 DEG C. under either of the conditions set forth above. The process is also applicable to the corresponding potassium compounds. Specifications 379,549 and 381,373 are referred to.
