Abstract

Fertilizers are produced by subjecting aqueous calcium chloride lyes, such as the waste calcium chloride liquors of ammonium soda works, to double decomposition with ammonia and carbon dioxide or with ammonium carbonates and transforming the reaction mass without separation of its constituents into a dried product consisting substantially of calcium carbonate and ammonium chloride. The reaction may be carried out under pressure. Instead of ammonia or carbon dioxide, gas mixtures, e.g. gases from the distillation of coal, coke-oven gas, flue gases or combustion gases, containing one or both of these constituents, may be used for the double decomposition. When such gas mixtures are employed care is taken to remove therefrom such constituents, e.g. cyanogen and hydrogen sulphide, as would produce products injurious to plants.
