Abstract

Urea is made by a process, in which gases containing excess ammonia, with respect to carbon dioxide, and carbon dioxide are reacted together with recycled gases, as hereinafter explained under ammonium carbamate forming conditions, the resulting product is subjected to urea synthesis conditions, the crude urea containing product is expanded and separated into ammonia-rich gas which is recycled to the urea synthesis zone and/or recovered as a comparatively pure gas, and a carbamate-containing urea solution which is further expanded and separated into a gaseous product which is recycled to the carbamate formation zone, and a carbamate-containing urea solution which is again expanded, decomposed, and separated into a gaseous product which is recycled to the carbamate formation zone and a urea rich aqueous solution. Especially useful starting mixtures of ammonia and carbon dioxide are those obtained from the production of melamine from urea. Two examples are described with reference to a flow sheet, in which the detailed compositions of the various streams in the system are included.
