Abstract

In the recovery of ammonia from coal gas, the amount of ammonia in the gaseous products is distributed so that its concentration in one portion of the gas is increased, and this enriched portion is passed into a solution of ammonium bicarbonate in a washer from which the solid salt is recovered. By this process the carbon dioxide in the crude gas is utilized for the purpose of separating the ammonia as bicarbonate. One portion of the gas is passed through the usual condensers and scrubbers, from which the ammonia is recovered, and added to the other portion, which enters the ammonium bicarbonate washer. Sodium chloride may be used instead of or as well as ammonium bicarbonate, in which case sodium bicarbonate will separate, and ammonium chloride will accumulate. The contents of the absorber may then be filtered and sodium bicarbonate obtained; the filtrate is boiled to expel ammonia and carbon dioxide to be returned to the crude gas, and to leave a solution of ammonium and sodium chloride which may be worked up to yield ammonium chloride. To redistribute the ammonia, the gas made during one period of carbonization may be deprived of its ammonia, which is then added to the gas made during the next period, or two installations may be operated side by side, the ammonia from one being passed into the crude gas in the other which alone is provided with an ammonium bicarbonate washer.
