Abstract

In the production of a non-poisonous sulphur-free town gas from a poisonous fuel gas, the gas without previous removal of its sulphur compounds, is passed together with steam over a catalyst of porous carbon. The latter may comprise peat, lignite or low temperature coke or active carbon. The catalyst may be corroded at high temperature with carbonic acid gas or steam, or it may be admixed with compounds of the alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, or of magnesium, preferably oxides, hydroxides, carbonates or sulphydrates. Specification 271,523, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], is referred to.
