Abstract

1407161 Sulphur dioxide; sulphuric acid CHEMIEBAU DR A ZIEREN GmbH & CO KG 12 Jan 1973 [14 Jan 1972] 1723/73 Heading C1A SO 2 is produced by burning solid (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 at 850-1250‹ C. together with a fuel and an O 2 -containing gas, wherein the (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 is being obtained by evaporating an (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 solution by direct heat-exchange with the hot SO 2 gas from the combustion, and wherein the solution is that formed as a by-product in the synthesis of an organic compound. The (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 solution may be evaporated down to (a) a slurry containing 20-45% by wt. H 2 O and then the slurry burnt, (b) a suspension containing 30-50% by wt. H 2 O, the solid separated from the mother liquor and the solid containing <20% by wt. H 2 O burnt and the mother liquor recycled to the evaporation step, or (c) a solid containing 10% by wt. H 2 O by atomizing the (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 solution into the hot gas stream and then the solid burnt. The hot SO 2 gas from the combustion furnace may be cooled to 690-880‹ C. prior to entry into the evaporator and then the gas leaving the evaporator at a temperature of 100-250‹ C. cooled to 30-50‹ C. to condense out the H 2 O content. The cooled SO 2 gas may be contacted with H 2 SO 4 to remove NH 3 and the H 2 SO 4 added to the (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 solution. The SO 2 may be converted into H 2 SO 4 by the contact process. The residence time of the (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 in the furnace may be 0À2-20 sees. The initial (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 solution may have a concentration of 32-40% by wt. and be derived from the ammoniation of the reaction mixture obtained in the conversion of cyclohexanone oxime to #-caprolactam.
