Abstract
232,431. Synthetic Ammonia &. Nitrates, Ltd., (Collett, E.). May 29, 1924. Hydrogen is obtained by the decomposition of water by means of mercury at elevated temperature. In a cycle process, mercury may be volatilized and mixed with water vapour at the same temperature, and the gaseous products are led to a heat-interchanger and then to a scrubber or preferably a Cottrell precipitator to remove any mercuric oxide carried in the gas stream. When sufficient mercuric oxide has been deposited in the heat-interchanger, which is used to heat fresh water vapour to the reaction temperature, the gases are led into a second interchanger while the mercuric oxide in the first is decomposed into oxygen and mercury by heating, preferably at reduced pressure, the mercury being again employed in the process. The reaction may be performed under pressure which may be sufficiently high for one or both of the reacting substances to remain in the liquid state.
