Orygenated organic compounds; alcohols.- In the catalytic manufacture of oxygenated organic compounds such as alcohols by a cyclic process, an inert gas such as nitrogen or an excess of one of the reagents is introduced before the reaction into a gas mixture containing hydrogen and oxides of carbon in the stoichiometric proportions determined by the reaction. After separating the reaction products, the whole of the residual gases is mixed with fresh gases containing the reagents in the stoichiometric proportions, and the mixture is recirculated. Suitably, the whole or part of the initial mixture, is passed through an air burner, thus introducing nitrogen, or over a suitable catalyst in the presence of steam, thus enriching the mixture in hydrogen. Specification 313.467 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that with a gas mixture of suitable composition, the manufacture of oxygenated organic compounds may be combined with that of ammonia. As shown, a purified compressed gas mixture, suitable CO + N + 7H, enters at A and passes in part through an apparatus H in which it is treated with steam in the presence of a suitable catalyst; the apparatus H need not be worked continuously, The gases then pass through a catalyst chamber C in which methanol is produced. The methanol is condensed in a cooler D and the residual gases pass through a catalyst chamber C' in which ammonia is produced. The ammonia is removed in a cooler D<1> and the residual gases are returned by a pump P. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
